ChatGPT memory disappeared? What happened, and how to never lose it again

talkamore3 min read

If you opened ChatGPT's memory panel and found it empty, you are not imagining it and you did not do anything wrong. This has happened to waves of users, most recently in August 2026, when enough people lost their saved memories at once that OpenAI's status page acknowledged the incident. Some people got a partial recovery. Some did not.

Here is what to do right now, why this keeps happening, and how to make sure it never costs you anything again.

Do these three things first

1. Check whether it is really gone. Go to Settings, then Personalization, then Memory. Sometimes the panel loads empty because of a display bug and comes back later. Also try asking ChatGPT directly: "what do you know about me?" It sometimes answers from layers of memory the panel does not show.

2. Export your data today. Settings, then Data Controls, then Export. You get an email with everything, including your chat history. Even if the memory itself is gone, your conversations still contain most of what it knew. Do this now, not after the next incident.

3. Write down the answer to "what do you know about me". If anything at all comes back from that question, copy it somewhere you control. That text is a snapshot of your memory, and it is the seed for rebuilding.

Why this keeps happening

ChatGPT's memory is a compressed set of hidden notes. You cannot see the full store, you cannot verify a save happened, and when it fills up, older things quietly fall out. OpenAI says this plainly in their own docs: memory "will not include everything."

That design has a consequence: when something goes wrong, there is nothing for you to check, nothing to back up, and no way to know what you lost. You find out weeks later, when it stops knowing your job or your kid's name.

The problem is not that a service had an outage. Every service has outages. The problem is that the memory is a locked box, so an outage can quietly take everything and you have no copy.

The fix is memory you can see

We build Talkamore, so you know where this is going, and we will say it plainly: the fix we believe in is memory that exists as pages you can open.

You talk to it, and it writes what you say into pages about your people, your projects, and the things you keep coming back to. You can read every page, fix anything it got wrong, and every answer it gives shows the day you said the thing. There is no hidden layer. If it knows something, you can find the sentence.

Two properties matter specifically for the "disappeared" problem:

  • Nothing can be quietly lost. When a page fills up, older notes move to a linked archive page instead of being deleted. This is enforced in the code, not in a promise.
  • You can always walk away with it. Your pages are yours to read and export at any time. A memory you can copy is a memory you cannot be locked out of.

Rebuild in five minutes

If ChatGPT still knows anything about you, you can move it:

  1. Ask ChatGPT: "what do you know about me? write it all out."
  2. Copy the answer.
  3. Paste it into Talkamore when it asks what your AI already knows.

Your pages start full on day one, and from then on the memory grows by itself while you talk. If ChatGPT's panel goes blank again, it costs you nothing, because the record lives somewhere you can see it.

It is free to start, no card needed: talkamore.com.

And even if you never touch our product, please do the export. The people hurt worst by these incidents are the ones who assumed the box would always be there.
